The Friends Help Out in Lowellville’s Dam Duck Derby!

On July 9, 2016, Friends of the Mahoning River participated in the first-ever Dam Duck Derby, sponsored by the Village of Lowellville as part of the annual Lowellville Day celebration.

Don Rex, Ed Hahn, and Joel Beeghly caught most of the hundreds of ducks after their release upriver.

For this event, Lowellville released hundreds of numbered plastic ducks onto the Mahoning River. Each duck was ‘adopted’ for $5 at the Lowellville police station earlier that week (with total proceeds benefiting the Lowellville Police Association).

The first three ducks to make it to the finish line were then awarded cash prizes. Since the friends group has many paddlers in the organization, we were asked by the Village of Lowellville to round up the remaining rubber ducks on the river.

Our very own Treasurer, Sara Smith, was one of the winners, scoring second place in the race!

In addition, the Friends also had a float in the parade for the day’s celebration, and won an award for our creative entry.
